Karl joined University of Cincinnati as CIO in 2011 to lead a nearly $3 billion investment program managing nearly $2B in permanent endowment capital and $1 billion in short-term assets. Under UC’s small but elite team, the endowment has generated more than $1 billion of investment gains, doubled in size, delivered $750 million of support to UC, and received numerous industry accolades including awards for outstanding endowment governance and CIO of the Year.
UC has become a partner of choice for top investment firms across venture capital, small buyout, growth equity, and hedge fund managers due to a highly efficient and effective investment process, a “no-jerks” policy, and the amazing programs supported by UC’s endowment, including thousands of scholarships for worthy and underprivileged students, professorships, research programs, and a wide variety of other program such as the Ohio Innocence Project.
Prior to joining UC, Karl co-led an institutional-quality investment program for family office, Summer Hill, and spent eight years in Seattle and San Francisco investing in private equity and venture capital with Pantheon Ventures, Frazier & Company, Frank Russell, and Compass Capital.
Karl earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard University, where he was an NCAA Division I All-American swimmer. Karl grew up in Cincinnati, where he lives today with his wife, Kaki, and three sons. Karl is on the CIO Council of Accelerate Investors and serves on the investment committees of UC Health and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.
